Jessica in an Updo | How to achieve a great Updo

Unless you're going to the prom or you want to mimic Jessica Simpson's hair for a wedding, you want your hair to be looser than this look. You don't want a tight Updo it can look too stuffy.

The key to a simple updo is hair that's not freshly washed. Day-after-washing hair is easy to manage, less slick & stays in place better. Keep in mind dry shampoos like Bumble & Bumble hair powder gives hair texture & body. For a cheaper route, try simple baby powder.

To get Jessica's look, gather hair back, loosely twist it & pin it in place with long straight pins (they are a girl's best friend when it comes to updos. Get them at any beauty supply store).

For volume like Jessica, you want to tease hair at the crown. Simply hold a section of hair up & backcomb it starting about 3 to 4 inches from the scalp.

How to get this great straight and sleek look

Jessica doesn't always have long, wavy hair. For a period of time she went out with a medium-length straight look & recently she got rid of her extensions & her hair is back to a medium length. To get this look, you'll want to apply a quarter-size amount of straightening balm through damp hair. If your hair is already super straight, you can skip this step.

Dry hair with a paddle brush, pulling brush in a downward motion.

Finally, rub a dime-size amount of shine serum through hair. For a super-sleek look (this works great if you have naturally curly hair), smooth hair straight with a flatiron.

Believe it or not, this photo was taken when Jessica had shorter hair. Yep, Jessica got this look with the help of hair extensions.

Hair extensions can not only simplify your hairstyling, but they give hair a ton of body. Always go for extensions that match your hair color & texture & be prepared to shell out some bucks (from $250 to $1000).

Jessica Simpson's hair here -- featured on her Christmas cover album -- is all about volume. To get this look, you'll want to spray volumizing tonic on roots. Blow dry with a large round brush, then wrap sections of hair around a medium-barrel curling iron leaving ends free. The trick here is to go in opposite directions to create the illusion of volume & natural curl.

For extra-fullness, apply saltwater spray as a last step (see previous picture for product suggestions).

Extra tip: A 1-inch barrel on your curling iron is your best bet no matter the length of your hair. If you go larger, the curls will be too big, and smaller, they'll be too tight.

There's nothing hotter right now than waves, & Jessica Simpson's hair in this picture from the 'Dukes of Hazzard' is pretty easy to get -- provided you have long, long hair. (Keep in mind that Simpson's hair here, is not real, these are extensions).

Here's how to mimic this look:

Step 1: Apply volumizing tonic to roots. I like Bumble & Bumble or you can try Aveda volumizing tonic.

Step 2: Blow dry hair until it's slightly damp. Blowdrying tip: Hold dryer above your head & train air downward so it flows from roots to ends. This way hair won't look dull & will be easier to manage.

Step 3: Scrunch hair with fingers.

Step 4: Spray in saltwater spray.
