Shiny things PART 2 — Once I stop looping on the thing that DOESN’T work, I can make room for the thing that DOES work

Worn on: Monday April 1st

I’m currently in the middle of Daisy Jones and The Six — finally getting around to watching it! I’ve been so inspired by the fashion. Wow. I’m in awe of Daisy’s wardrobe.

Yes, this was one of the “shiny things” I referenced in yesterday’s post. And by shiny thing I mean fashion inspiration so good that I want to drop everything and make it my whole personality, giving no thought to what I’ve learned actually works for my lifestyle and body. Lol.

Daisy wears a lot of halter crop tops and high rise flare jeans. Classic 70s. I love this look on her. But I also KNOW this doesn’t work for my body and comfort preferences.

I’ve tried high rise jeans so many times over the past 10 years, always whispering, “This time it’ll be different!” to myself.

Then it ends up exactly the same. They don’t work and I never reach for them. Oh sure — a high rise *should* work for me. But here’s the thing — they FEEL terrible to me. Instant stomach ache.

So I sell the jeans and swear to never again buy high rise pants.

Until I get inspired by someone else wearing them and conveniently forget my previous experience, once more thinking, “Ah but THIS time it’s be different!”

After doing this umpteen times, I finally saw the light. I stopped buying high rise a couple years ago and only bought bottoms if they were mid rise — extra points if they were soft, like track pants, athletic shorts, boxer shorts, etc.

That one choice has transformed my closet over the past two years — once I stopped trying to fit myself into this particular box, my whole wardrobe unlocked. Truly, it feels like a little miracle to have clothes that actually feel comfortable to me now.

So — back to Daisy.

I’m so inspired by her style, but high rise bottoms are officially out for me. It felt so good to release something I KNOW doesn’t work for me, and then follow up with two questions:

So then what other elements could I use as inspiration? (See? Once I stop looping on the thing that doesn’t work, I can make room for the things that might actually work!)

I do love a good halter top. I don’t like tight tops but maybe I could try a loose one like this. Or try it in a dress form like this.

She wears lots of boots with shorts too — I love that and already do that! Bingo!

A few other things — crochet tops, more color, patchwork things, mayyybe a flare pant? Just some ideas.

What items do I already have in my closet that might work?

A big denim shirt (like today!). And I do have cowboy boots! And an amazing vintage 70s dress, plus some Christy Dawn dresses. So yeah, pretty great start, actually.

Anyway, it’s so fun to break down inspiration like this — to extract a few individual elements and fold them into what already works for you, what you already have.

So while today’s outfit wasn’t meant to look like an outfit from the 70s, you best believe I built the whole outfit around this denim shirt — all because I got inspired to wear it after watching Daisy.
